Soundwalks In the Parks 2021

Join us for MSAE’s sixth annual series of free, public soundwalks in the parks with support from the Chicago Park District’s Night Out In the Parks program, launching on Saturday, July 10. Our thematically focused events are special and highly accessible ways to discover mindfulness through listening, led by faculty and alumni from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and fellow teaching artists for a unique outdoor experience for all ages.

Hear Below 2020

Join us at 12:30 on Friday, February 14 for Hear Below: Listening to Chicago Underground, a free, public soundwalk to explore Chicago’s pedway system with our ears, led by Eric Leonardson, Christophe Preissing, and Alex Braidwood and his Listening Instruments..

Meet at 112 S. Michigan Avenue, inside the entrance of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s MacLean Center between 12:15 and 12:30. An elevator serves those that require accessibility.

At 12:30 we will walk across Monroe Street to the entrance to Grant Park North parking garage where the soundwalk will begin. The entire soundwalk is wheelchair accessible.

We will stop and listen to a variety of unique sound environment, get a little history along the way, and conclude with a conversation at the end of the soundwalk. By experiencing the hustle and bustle of this rather ordinary of conveyances, the Pedway, reveals what urban critic Jane Jacobs calls “the seemingly mysterious and perverse behavior of cities”.

Please register as there will be a limited number of participants in this soundwalk through the online event. This soundwalk is a complementary event and proof of the topics to be discussed that morning in the Advances In Eco-sensing and Soundscape panel, a part of the 108th College Art Association conference program.

This event is presented by NON:op Open Opera Works and Midwest Society of Acoustic Ecology with support of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and World Listening Project.
