Listen up: In these disquieting COVID-19 times, hushed cities are making a loud impression on our ears

Through the disquiet of COVID-19 news and the hush of locked-down cities, peoples’ ears are suddenly perking up to new sounds — or sounds that were always there, just drowned out by the whir of urban life.

Udo Noll, a Berlin-based communications engineer and media artist, is the founder of Radio Aporee, a website that provides a platform for field-recording projects. With the usual cacophony of noise from city life much diminished thanks to COVID-19, people are homing in on the contours of urban soundscapes, and academic researchers and sound artists are trying to harness the moment of sound appreciation.


For a blind man in London, Ont., it’s the pitter-patter of approaching footsteps on the sidewalk.

For a librarian in midtown Toronto, it was the rhythmic singsong of a robin perched in a tree.

Hildegard Westerkamp, founder of the Vancouver Soundwalk Collective, recently wrote in her sound diary that the ubiquitous urban hum had “turned off,” leaving nothing but a “blissful quiet.”

Roger Khouri, of London, Ont., says the new quiet in the city has allowed him to hear approaching footsteps on the street. Khouri, who is blind, also says the clarity with which he’s able to hear birds allows him to visualize where trees are located.

Halifax resident Milena Khazanavicius, who is blind and walks with a guide dog, says the reduction in traffic makes it more challenging for her to cross the street.
