The Shapiro Center's Research Symposium is a platform for students and faculty to highlight their artistic research and build dialogues of inquiry around issues that arise in the studio, lab, maker space, archives, and working across disciplines.

March 17–18, 2017 the Shapiro Center will highlight creative research and collaborations at SAIC to promote new strategies that art and design can bring to research practices. We will host, presentations, panels, workshop, and have free food to gather and debate.

Linda Keane and Kirinia Von Slomski: Eco Sensing and the Chicago River

Sound Mapping, data visualization and augmented reality applications create opportunities for an ecological boat tour for the city of Chicago which call attention to the politics of water use, water quality and water conservation techniques as essential to reimagining a healthy city. With honored guests Eric Leonardson and Lindsey French.

Rebby M Montalvo: Neomancing the Vegetables

Exploring haptic intelligence, everyday geographies, biomimetic and monuments. Major themes of the project will include biomimicry, feeling feelings for robots, and artificial intelligence.

Dylan Fish / Jenna Boyles: Modular Cloth: Connecting Textiles And Electronics In The Digital Era

An investigation into the parallels between electronics and textiles through modular ways of working, and how electronic textiles can be made more accessible.

Workshop 1: Color Changing Cloth: Thermochromic Soft Circuits Workshop by EAGER Group Fabricating Data Dylan Fish, Jenna Boyles

Thermochromism is the ability to change color due to a change in temperature. In this workshop participants will learn how to use resistive wire as a heating element in a soft circuit and create a custom thermochromic fabric swatch.No experience necessary. Materials and boxed lunch provided.

Workshop 2: Phantom Limb: Batting Practice EAGER Group Phantom Limb Adela Goldbard and Emilio Rojas
Workshop to be held in the Columbus Performance Space, 280 S. Columbus Dr. 

The workshop will host a batting session open to the public, to practice your swing with a prosthetic leg that was created from the original leg exhibited at the Oglesby Mansion in Decatour, IL.

Workshop 3: Devising Unexpected Encounters by Shapiro Fellow Madalyn Brooker and Mentor Carron Little

In this workshop participants will collaborate to create public performance encounters utilizing performance as a tool to view the city from a different lens. Food provided.

Workshop 4: Window Wildflowers by EAGER Group Fertile Design, Soniya Khasgiwale, Erin Delaney, Jessica Gorse

Explore compostable samples created from Fertile Design's research using their materials with natural dyes to explore color and design. Participants will be given a small terra cotta pot with information for their own samples to experiment with in their window at home to make a small transplantable garden. Pizza provided.
