News from the WFAE

As a long-standing affiliate organization of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE), MSAE is excited to share several important updates and accomplishments from our global network.

1. DOIs for Acoustic Ecology Review
Exciting news for acoustic ecology researchers! The World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE), with support from Simon Fraser University, has now assigned Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to 43 papers published in the WFAE 2023 Conference Proceedings in its open access journal, Acoustic Ecology Review.

DOIs are a powerful tool for researchers, offering:

  • Permanent links to scholarly work
  • Increased visibility and discoverability
  • Reliable citation and indexing in academic databases

2. Bylaw Amendments & Restructuring
On August 10, 2025, voting closed on a set of amendments to the bylaws of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE). The amendments were successfully passed, authorizing improvements to governance and strengthening the role of individual members. While Affiliate Organizations such as the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE) remain central, individual members now enjoy greater representation and access within the WFAE. The new bylaws also clarify direction and streamline governance, ensuring the WFAE is more responsive to the needs of both affiliates and individual members.

3. Call to Fill WFAE Board and Executive Positions
With the new bylaws in place, WFAE is preparing to fill open positions on its Board and Executive. This process is designed to embody the principles of inclusivity and accountability set forth in the restructuring. Details on the nomination process will be announced soon. Stay tuned if you’re interested in stepping into a leadership role at the international level.

4. WFAE 2025 Annual General Meeting
The WFAE’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place in September 2025 [exact date TBA]. The AGM is the central opportunity for members worldwide to participate in WFAE’s decision-making and future planning. We encourage all MSAE members who also hold WFAE membership to attend and contribute.
