Geographies of Listening

Geographies of Listening
“GA poster for the Geographies of Listening event. Text is mostly black, with emphasized text in green on a white background. It bears the title of the event, “Geographies of Listening,” with the GLASS (Great Lakes Association of Sound Studies) and MSAE (Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology) logos at the top. Two photos are side-by-side, each one with a lone pale figure wearing headphones immersed in a leafy green outdoor setting. They are listening intently. The text for the poster is the same as the text below.

Listening practices are deeply connected to the physical and social landscapes we inhabit. Social practices of listening can connect us further with the cological and cultural communities in which we participate. What do we listen for? Who, or what, do we listen with? During the past year, how have virtual modes of listening supported or challenged our connections with our communities?

On Wednesday, February 23rd, at 5pm CST, the Great Lakes Association of Sound Studies (GLASS) and the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE) will host a virtual symposium on “Geographies of Listening.” MSAE members and US and UK artists will share recent audio projects that address the geographic conditions of listening, including relationships with human and more-than human communities. Projects will show modes of engagement that experiment with virtual tools and platforms. A livestream screening of pre-recorded video and audio presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion among presenters and with event attendees. Presentations will highlight the recent work including MSAE’s 2021 Summer Soundwalks in the Parks, the 2021 Aural Neighborhoods events, and Listening to Stillness in Motion.
