Summer Soundwalk Series: Norman Long and Sara Zalek

July 27 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us at Big Marsh Park for a soundwalk led by Norman Long and Sara Zalek, entitled “Expanding Awareness”. We will explore being in the present moment while simultaneously expanding our sense of presence to our surrounding ecosystem. We are always aware and always expanding. Our presence together is precious. Meet at the picnic tables.

Norman Long’s work centers on walking, listening, improvising, performing, teaching, field recording, and exploring memory, place, ecology, and race. Long has performed and exhibited at Yale University’s Center for Collaborative Arts & Media in Newhaven, High Zero Festival in Baltimore, as well as the Experimental Sound Studio, Kavi Gupta Gallery, The Renaissance Society, Chicago Humanities Festival, Chicago Cultural Center, and the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial all in Chicago. Long has performed and toured with Angel Bat Dawid and the Brothahood, the Ali/Harris/Long/McKenna group, Honey Pot Performance Spectralina, Todd Carter, Xris Espinoza, Carol Genetti, Damon Locks, Jamal Moore, Tatsuya Nakatani, Joe Namy, Cristal Sabbagh, Ami Yamasaki, and Sara Zalek.

Sara Zalek (@01saratonin) is a transdisciplinary artist, producer, and curator of situations and curious objects. Rooted in physical investigations of trauma, resilience, and transformation, their work is intimate, raw, poetic. They make performances into learning situations, workshops, and sensing environments to encourage thoughtful interpersonal connections.

In partnership with Night Out In The Parks and the Chicago Park District, our program consists of a series of guided soundwalks, workshops and training sessions that engage multi-generational communities in their own neighborhoods. Participants will listen to and for cultural and natural features of the landscape. Rivers, streets, residential and commercial dwellings, traffic patterns, human and animal sounds all feature in these soundscapes. Are plants tuning in, contributing, or responding to all this sound? How do we listen culturally, collaboratively, and more carefully?
