Call for Proposals – Geographies of Listening

Neighborhood Speaker Series – Winter 2022

Deadline: Monday, November 15, 2021

Geographies of Listening – Wednesday, February 23, 2022 – 5:00pm – 6:30pm Central

Listening practices are deeply connected to the physical and social landscapes we inhabit. Social practices of listening can connect us further with the ecological and sociocultural communities in which we participate. What do we listen for? Who, or what, do we listen with? How does listening allow us to engage with our surroundings in more attentive ways? And during the past year, how have virtual modes of listening supported or challenged our connections with our communities?

This virtual event will be part of the Great Lakes Association for Sound Studies (GLASS) Neighborhood Speaker Series. In partnership with GLASS, practitioners and artists in the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology will share recent work and projects which address the geographic conditions of listening, including relationships with human and more-than human communities and modes of engagement that experiment with virtual tools and platforms. Presentations will highlight recent work including MSAE’s 2021 Summer Soundwalks in the Parks, the 2021 Aural Neighborhoods events, and Listening to Stillness in Motion. We will begin with a short, live screening of pre-recorded video and audio presentations, followed by a roundtable discussion among presenters and with event attendees.

The event steering committee invites MSAE members to submit brief proposals (~150 words) that detail their projects and engagement with the event theme via this Google Form, https://forms.gle/v8DHdGkGtiCXmC7e6, by Monday, November 8th. We will notify those selected to present by Monday, November 15th. Presenters who are selected will send audio or video files of no more than five minutes to lindseymaefrench@gmail.com by Wednesday, February 9th, 2022.
