About the MSAE

The Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE), founded in 2009, is a chapter of the American Society for Acoustic Ecology (ASAE), a membership organization dedicated to exploring the role of sound in natural habitats and human societies, and promoting public dialogue concerning the identification, preservation, and restoration of natural and cultural sound environments. The ASAE is the United States affiliate of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE). More info about the ASAE can be found on its website: www.acousticecology.org/asae/

The MSAE realizes it mission through local initiatives such as the World Listening Project, a non-profit organization based in Illinois devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practices of listening and field recording. Founded in July, 2008, the World Listening Project has begun building and maintaining these online resources:

Membership

MSAE membership comes through membership to the ASAE, and costs $50 US. Student, senior, artist, and limited income memberships are available on a sliding scale from $30—$49.

Membership benefits include:

  • Subscription to the annual print publication Soundscape: The Journal of Acoustic Ecology.
  • On-line journal featuring news and events relevant to members of the ASAE
  • Reduced admission to WFAE and ASAE-sponsored conferences and events
  • 15% discount on recordings available from the Earth Ear label (see www.earthear.com for details)

About the WFAE

The World Forum for Acoustic Ecology (WFAE), founded in 1993, is an international association of affiliated organizations and individuals, who share a common concern with the state of the world’s soundscapes. Its members represent a multi-disciplinary spectrum of individuals engaged in the study of the social, cultural and ecological aspects of the sonic environment. Membership in the WFAE comes with membership in the ASAE/MSAE.
